Fly Fishing Waders

Choosing Appropriate Fly Fishing Waders

One of the most essential gear elements for a great fishing experience is a pair of fly fishing waders. A good fly fisherman spends as much time in the water as he does in his boat, and a pair of fly fishing waders is essential if you want to stay warm and relatively dry while reaching places you can’t reach just by staying along the shore.

The general variation you will find when choosing the correct fly fishing waders to suit you is the “boot foot waders” which include built-in boots, and “stocking foot waders” which end in a rubber sock. Boot foot waders have the advantages of being comfortable and convenient. You obviously do not have to buy a separate pair of fishing boots, and you can rest assured that you will stay dry throughout. On the downside, you generally have less support for your ankle with boot foot waders and they also tend to be quite a bit heavier than their bootless counterparts. If you decide to purchase boot foot waders, you should ensure that you can move around easily when wearing them, and that the boot section of the waders fits you as comfortably as possible. The great thing about them is that they are easy to get on and off, so if they aren’t you need to try a better fitting pair, because their convenience is one of their greatest advantages.

Fishermen who are looking for lots of foot support, perhaps foreseeing the need to traverse a river with a large amount of slippery rocks, would probably opt for a pair of stocking foot fly fishing waders instead. Bear in mind, however, that you will need to purchase a separate pair of wading boots to wear over the sock. Beyond the issue of whether to purchase waders with built-in boots or not, you can also choose between chest-high or waist-high waders.

The advantage in choosing a pair of waders that fit up to your chest is that they are suitable for any water depth you may find yourself in. Conversely, if you plan to fish in more shallow water you could probably benefit with a pair of waist-high waders. When purchasing your waders, you would want to ensure that they fit you comfortably even with a few extra layers of clothing underneath. This is especially true if you plan on fishing in cold weather. It is also important to ensure that there is enough room inside the waders to move around in them comfortably - they should not be skin-tight.

Fly fishing waders are an essential element in a fly fisherman’s gear, so ensure that they fit you comfortably, that they are durable and that they do not have any leaks.
